David Lynch's 1999 film, 'The Straight Story', is now viewed with additional pathos following the director's death in January 2025. The film, which tells the true story of 73-year-old Second World War veteran Alvin Straight's 300-mile lawnmower journey to reconcile with his ailing brother, was released in May 1999.
Lynch's longtime editor, producer, and partner, Mary Sweeney, discovered Straight's story in the New York Times. She optioned the rights and co-wrote the screenplay with John Roach before bringing it to Lynch.
Richard Farnsworth, a stuntman turned actor, played Alvin Straight. He was 79 and terminally ill during the shoot, making the role his final performance. The film also marked the final work for cinematographer Freddie Francis.
Despite critical acclaim, 'The Straight Story' earned $6.2 million at the US box office, less than its $10 million budget. It is currently available to rent digitally in the UK.
