Former Manchester City playmaker David Silva is returning to football after ending his retirement to play in the Hong Kong Premier League. The ex-Spain midfielder, 40, has signed for newly-promoted Supreme Sha Tin, reportedly on a short-term deal.

Silva had announced his retirement in 2023 following an anterior cruciate ligament injury. He spent 10 seasons with Manchester City, from 2010 to 2020, winning four Premier League titles and two FA Cups. He also won the World Cup with Spain in 2010 and the European Championship twice.

In a video message on the club's social media channels, Silva stated, “I am very happy to join Supreme Sha Tin for this experience.” He added, “I am really looking forward to going to Hong Kong to enjoy the culture, the people and the food in Sha Tin and the football in Hong Kong. I can’t wait to go, so I look forward to seeing you all soon.”

Supreme Sha Tin, currently eighth in the league after four matches, confirmed that Silva will arrive in Hong Kong soon to settle in, join squad training, and build up to match fitness before his debut. The team is scheduled to play against Hong Kong Football Club on 18 October.

Why this matters: The return of a decorated player like David Silva to professional football, particularly in the Hong Kong Premier League, could bring increased attention and a boost to the league.
