De Klerk's Heroics Spark Pandemonium as London Spirit Win First Hundred Match by Five Wickets!
Nadine de Klerk, the South African all-rounder with a licence to thrill, rode to the rescue of London Spirit at Trent Bridge on Saturday, delivering an unbeaten 41 from just 22 deliveries to steer her team to their first win in The Hundred women's competition. And what a ride it was!
The chase began like a rocket taking off – fast and furious – with opener Grace Harris blasting 37 from just 20 deliveries. But then, the wheels came crashing down as Spirit lost four wickets for a paltry 12 runs. De Klerk, however, wasn't about to let it all go up in flames. Alongside Marie Kelly, she conjured a thrilling counter-attack, their partnership of 63 from just 37 balls sending Trent Rockets reeling.
Kelly's contribution – an explosive 39 from 26 deliveries – was the perfect catalyst for de Klerk to take centre stage. And what a performance it was! Two majestic sixes in the final four balls sealed the deal, leaving Rocket fans stunned and Spirit supporters ecstatic.
Earlier, De Klerk's fellow countrywoman Marizanne Kapp had set the tone with an exceptional spell of three wickets for just 12 runs. She accounted for Beth Mooney, Sophia Dunkley, and Sophie Luff in short order, leaving Trent Rockets reeling at 142-7. Despite Gardner's spirited 34 and Heath's dynamic 31 off 19 balls, Kapp's efforts had done the damage.
Both teams now sit on one win apiece from two matches played, but Trent Rockets hold a slim advantage in the league table due to a superior net run-rate. The competition continues to be a thrilling ride, with every match hanging precariously in the balance. And amidst all the drama, the earlier men's match between Manchester Super Giants and Birmingham Phoenix at Old Trafford was abandoned due to inclement weather.
