A British couple has been found badly burned and semi-conscious after being trapped in a ravine during the devastating wildfires in Spain's Almeria province. The couple is in intensive care after being rescued by Civil Guard officers.
The fires, which have now been contained, claimed the lives of 12 people, including four believed to be Britons. The blaze burned through about 7,000 hectares of land, authorities said.
The couple was discovered by Civil Guard officers searching for survivors near the worst-hit village of Bédar in the early hours of Friday morning. The officers heard distant cries for help and followed the sound to find the couple in critical condition.
The rescue team praised the couple's ability to call out for help despite their severe injuries. 'Being able to call out in the condition they were in was a titanic effort,' said Rafael Zea, one of the officers involved in the operation.
Meanwhile, dozens of people, including British nationals, have been waiting anxiously to return to their homes in the affected area. Mike and Belinda Lithgow from Cornwall have been sleeping in their camper van alongside their dog, Rocket, and are hoping to check on their holiday property later today.
