Prominent figures such as Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and Elon Musk have recently expressed support for open-source AI, which refers to models that are freely available and modifiable by users.
Jensen Huang stated on X that "Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty." Microsoft initiated an open letter, signed by various venture capital firms and tech companies including SpaceX, Nvidia, Palantir, and Andreessen Horowitz, arguing for the necessity of open models for innovation and prosperity.
Conversely, Anthropic, creators of the Claude chatbot, has argued that open-source AI is dangerous because it is harder to regulate and apply safety guardrails compared to proprietary models. OpenAI, while a signatory to Microsoft's letter, has previously made similar arguments, with its head of strategic futures, Dean Ball, warning that an open-source policy could benefit China and lead to "full AI communism."

Anthropic and OpenAI, having established a lead in frontier AI, face a challenge to their dominance from cheaper, more accessible open-source models.
The debate has been brought to a head this month by the release of Kimi K3, a new Chinese open-source AI model capable of competing with some leading American counterparts. This development has prompted discussions among executives and officials in Silicon Valley and the White House on how to respond. The Trump administration is also divided, with Treasury secretary Scott Bessent accusing Chinese models of intellectual property theft and suggesting potential sanctions, while some American companies rely on these cheaper models.
