Defending Champion Murphy Exits British Open After Gilbert Defeat

Defending champion Shaun Murphy has been knocked out of the British Open after a 4-2 defeat by David Gilbert in the second round. Gilbert secured his place in the last 32 in Cheltenham, making a break of 117 in the opening frame and later peeling off three more half-centuries.

Murphy had taken the second and third frames with breaks of 64 and 103, but Gilbert ultimately proved too strong.

Elsewhere in the tournament, new world number one Zhao Xintong held off a fightback from Daniel Wells to progress 4-2. Judd Trump also came from behind, rattling off breaks of 96 and 87 to clinch a 4-2 victory over Ricky Walden.

Other results saw John Higgins edge a 4-3 win against Noppon Saengkham, and Stan Moody beat Yao Pengcheng 4-1. Mark Selby won two last-frame deciders, first against Lei Peifan and then against Jackson Page in the third round.
