Defending champion Michael van Gerwen has been eliminated from the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam, falling 6-5 to Daryl Gurney in the opening round. Northern Ireland's Gurney, who entered the tournament as a late replacement, initially took a 3-0 lead.
Van Gerwen, the Dutch top seed, then rallied to win five consecutive legs, putting him on the verge of victory. However, Gurney responded by taking the ninth leg, and after Van Gerwen missed six match darts, Gurney levelled the match at 5-5 before winning the deciding leg with the throw.
Gurney is now set to face England's Ross Smith in the last 16 on Saturday. Smith advanced after defeating Kevin Doets 6-3. Elsewhere, world number two Luke Humphries secured a 6-4 victory against Jermaine Wattimena, while Dutch number one Gian van Veen triumphed 6-2 over Chris Dobey.
