A derelict Grade II listed church in a wooded area of Leeds has been sold at auction for £100,000. St Mary's In The Wood United Reformed Church, located on Commercial Street in Morley, was sold earlier this week, according to auctioneers BTG Eddisons.
The 19th-century building, constructed in 1878, has been vacant for over 15 years and has not been used for worship since 2008. It fell into disrepair after sustaining extensive fire damage in June 2010, which led to the evacuation of 20 nearby residents due to fears of the steeple collapsing.
Previous plans to redevelop the site into a hotel, restaurant, and car park, and later into 18 apartments, did not proceed. BTG Eddisons did not disclose whether the buyer was commercial or private.
