The central United States has been pummelled by a series of devastating tornadoes in recent days, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming at least one life amidst sweltering heat and humidity that are also afflicting north-eastern states. The extreme weather, characterised by over 700 severe incidents including two dozen tornadoes across the region, has caused widespread power outages, with hundreds of thousands without electricity.
In Iowa, a 54-year-old man tragically lost his life after being struck by a falling tree at a homeless encampment in Des Moines. The tree is reported to have broken apart during the severe storms. In Illinois, a dramatic rescue effort took place as a police officer and photojournalist saved a man from the rubble of his home that was destroyed by a tornado in Streator. The victim was reportedly bloodied and suspected to have suffered broken limbs.
The scale of destruction is particularly concerning in areas south of Chicago, where at least three tornadoes flattened homes and brought down trees and power poles. In Merrillville, Indiana, authorities advised residents to seek emergency shelter as a large column of wind tore off the roof from a high school. Roads were subsequently blocked by dozens of fallen trees. Streator city officials have established a family-reunification centre for displaced residents, with the mayor expressing gratitude that no one was seriously injured despite the significant damage.
The severe weather has severely disrupted travel, with over 1,000 flights grounded, mainly in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and New York. Strong storms caused delays and cancellations at major airports in cities including Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York. Furthermore, drenching thunderstorms are forecast for eastern states through the end of the week, with further disruptive thunderstorms anticipated from North Carolina to much of New York state and parts of New England.
Adding to the challenges, parts of the north-east and mid-Atlantic regions continue to endure high heat and humidity. Temperatures in these areas are expected to reach the mid-30s Celsius, with the heat index potentially making conditions feel even hotter, exceeding 37 degrees Celsius. This combination of extreme weather events is placing considerable strain on infrastructure and emergency services across multiple US regions.
