Devon taxi driver ordered to repay over £60,000 for Covid loan fraud

A Devon taxi driver who fraudulently obtained £100,000 in Covid Bounce Back Loans has been ordered to repay £63,790.

  • Murat Dogantekin was jailed for two years and seven months in February 2025 for fraudulently securing £100,000 in Bounce Back Loans.
  • He inflated his taxi business turnover by over £350,000 to secure the loans.
  • The money was spent on a flat in Turkey, a car, and a pizza oven.

Murat Dogantekin, a 52-year-old taxi driver from Exeter, has been ordered to repay £63,790 following a confiscation order made at Exeter Crown Court on Tuesday 8 September 2026. The order reflects assets identified by Insolvency Service financial investigators.

Mr Dogantekin was given three months to repay the funds. Failure to do so could result in a further five years in prison, with the repayment still required in full.

He was jailed for two years and seven months in February 2025 after Insolvency Service investigations revealed he had fraudulently secured £100,000 in Bounce Back Loans in 2020. Mr Dogantekin inflated his taxi business turnover by more than £350,000 to obtain two £50,000 loans.

Investigations found that £48,000 of the loan funds were used to purchase a two-bedroom flat in Turkey. He also bought a 2017 Peugeot for £2,840 and a pizza oven for £800. Alexander Grierson, Head of Asset Recovery at the Insolvency Service, stated that Bounce Back Loans were not intended for such purchases.

Why this matters: This case highlights the ongoing efforts by the Insolvency Service to recover funds obtained through fraudulent means from government support schemes.
