Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has agreed to take the reins as Uruguay's interim head coach. The 47-year-old steps into the role following Marcelo Bielsa's departure after Uruguay's early exit from the World Cup group stage.
Forlan is expected to lead the national team for their autumn friendlies. A permanent manager is anticipated to be appointed either at the end of this year or in early 2027. In addition to his senior team duties, Forlan has also been named coach for Uruguay's Under-20 squad.
Bielsa, 70, became Uruguay boss in May 2023, overseeing 15 wins in 39 games. After the disappointing World Cup performance, he stated his tenure "left nothing behind." Forlan, who scored 36 goals in 112 appearances for Uruguay, won the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup where they reached the semi-finals.
