A groundbreaking digital register mapping the UK's vast network of underground pipes and cables, known as the National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), has officially gone live across England and Wales. This significant infrastructure project aims to revolutionise how construction and utility companies plan and execute groundwork, significantly reducing the risk of accidental strikes on vital assets.
The platform, developed by Ordnance Survey (OS) and backed by the government, consolidates data from over 1,000 organisations, including utility companies, local authorities, and transport networks. Before NUAR, obtaining comprehensive information about underground infrastructure often involved contacting multiple asset owners individually, a process that was both time-consuming and prone to gaps in data. This fragmented approach frequently led to accidental damage, causing service disruptions, environmental hazards, and serious injuries or even fatalities to workers.
NUAR provides a secure, centralised digital map accessible to authorised users, offering a clear picture of what lies beneath the surface. This 'subsurface map' includes details on electricity cables, gas pipes, water mains, fibre optic broadband lines, and drainage systems. By providing this consolidated view, the register is expected to streamline planning processes, improve safety for excavation teams, and enhance the efficiency of construction and maintenance projects across the country.
The initiative has been piloted in several regions, including the North East of England and London, demonstrating its effectiveness in practice. The full rollout across England and Wales marks a major milestone, with plans to extend the service to Northern Ireland in the near future.
