Gloucester City Council has reported a significant increase in complaints regarding abuse, threatening behaviour, and dogs fouling on memorials at Gloucester Old Cemetery.

  • Complaints from families visiting graves at Gloucester Old Cemetery have significantly increased.
  • Reports include dogs urinating and fouling on memorials, as well as abuse and threatening behaviour.
  • Signs reminding visitors to keep dogs on leads have been repeatedly vandalised.

Gloucester City Council has noted a significant rise in complaints from families visiting Gloucester Old Cemetery, also known as Tredworth Road Cemetery. Issues reported include abuse, threatening behaviour, and dogs urinating and fouling on memorials.

Cemetery staff have also received reports of visitors feeling intimidated by dogs running off-lead, particularly larger breeds. Declan Wilson, deputy leader and cabinet member for resources, described the situation as "deeply upsetting."

Signs installed throughout the cemetery, reminding visitors that dogs must be kept on leads, have been repeatedly vandalised with black spray paint. The council is working with Gloucestershire Police to address concerns about anti-social behaviour.

Visitors experiencing or witnessing abuse, threatening behaviour, or anti-social behaviour are encouraged to report incidents to the police.

Why this matters: The reported behaviour is causing distress to bereaved families visiting the graves of loved ones.

What this means for you: If you visit Gloucester Old Cemetery and experience or witness abuse, threatening behaviour, or anti-social behaviour, you are asked to report these incidents to the police.
