The defence in the trial of Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), has concluded its presentation of evidence at Newry Crown Court. Representing Sir Jeffrey, Kieran Vaughan KC informed the jury that no further evidence would be put forward on his client's behalf. Sir Jeffrey, aged 63, had previously given evidence for two days last week and was the only witness called by his defence team.
Sir Jeffrey denies a total of 18 sex abuse charges, which include one count of rape. These alleged offences are said to have occurred between 1985 and 2008. Among the accusations are acts of gross indecency and indecent assault against an alleged victim, known as Complainant A, when she was a child, between 1999 and 2008. He also faces charges related to Complainant B, dating back to 1985, including the charge of rape.
Lady Eleanor Donaldson, aged 60, also faces legal proceedings, denying five charges of aiding and abetting. Her lawyer, Ian Turkington KC, stated that no evidence would be offered in her defence. Lady Donaldson is undergoing a trial of the facts, having previously been deemed unfit to participate in a conventional trial due to mental health grounds, meaning she is not actively involved in the ongoing proceedings.
The hearing on Monday was primarily dedicated to legal arguments. The jury, comprising seven men and five women, has been informed that closing speeches from the legal teams will commence shortly. The prosecution is expected to deliver its closing arguments first, followed by lawyers representing Sir Jeffrey and Lady Donaldson, with these expected to conclude by Wednesday. Judge Paul Ramsey will then sum up the case and provide directions to the jury on Thursday, before they retire to consider their verdict.
This trial has drawn significant attention due to Sir Jeffrey Donaldson's prominent role in Northern Irish politics. His resignation as DUP leader and subsequent suspension from the party in March of this year sent shockwaves through the political landscape. The outcome of these proceedings will have considerable implications, both personally for those involved and for the political party he once led.
