Donnelly secures GB's first women's European marathon medal

Abbie Donnelly has etched her name in the record books, becoming the first British woman to win a marathon medal at the European Championships. Donnelly secured a bronze medal in Birmingham on Sunday, finishing in two hours 27 minutes 33 seconds.

Great Britain's women's team also celebrated a gold medal, outperforming Italy and Spain. Natasha Wilson finished fifth and Rose Harvey 14th, contributing to the team's success.

Donnelly's performance marks the best by a female British marathon runner at a European Championships since Kath Binns placed ninth in 1982. The 29-year-old expressed her delight, stating, "It means everything to do this here in Birmingham."

Finnish favourite Alisa Vainio took gold in 2:22:26, setting a new championship record. Hungary's Lili Anna Vindics-Toth claimed silver, with Donnelly crossing the finish line 12 seconds after her.
