A 10-mile walk from Lyme Regis to West Bay on Dorset's Jurassic Coast offers a route that can be transformed into a circular journey with the addition of a water taxi. The water taxi, a rigid inflatable boat (Rib), operates during the summer months between West Bay and Lyme Regis.
The walk itself begins inland from Lyme Regis, rather than directly along the coast, due to the friable nature of the west Dorset cliffs. The path to Charmouth, for example, diverts through a golf course. Along the route, walkers can encounter sculptures of palaeontologist Mary Anning, whose discovery of Ichthyosaurus anningae is represented.
The journey also passes historical sites, including the remains of St Gabriel's Church and Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast at 191 metres (627ft) above sea level. West Bay, the destination, was once known as Bridport Harbour and had its name changed by a railway company to attract tourists.
