The Jurassic Coast in Dorset is experiencing a surge in fossil hunting, with both casual enthusiasts and professional collectors scouring beaches like Charmouth. This increased activity is partly fuelled by the rising popularity and value of Jurassic fossils, creating a competitive market.
Social media platforms, including TikTok and Instagram, are credited with transforming the activity and introducing more people to fossil hunting. Martin Curtis, a professional guide and fossil hunter, noted a significant change in the past decade, with an influx of hunters accelerating during Covid staycations.
The heightened interest has led to concerns about over-collection in some areas, as the rate of erosion may struggle to expose new material quickly enough to meet demand. When new finds do emerge, word spreads rapidly online, further intensifying competition among collectors.
Rare finds and meticulously prepared specimens can fetch considerable sums. One notable example is the recent sale of a collection of 318 Jurassic fossils, amassed by private collector Chris Moore, to a museum in Abu Dhabi for what is believed to be an eight-figure sum.
