Residents living near Dove Stone reservoir in Greater Manchester have expressed concerns about a return to issues with car-jammed roads and litter, following the beauty spot's reopening. The reservoir, located near Greenfield in Oldham, reopened last week after a wildfire burned for more than three weeks.
Local residents reported that the area had previously experienced obstructed roads, litter, and visitors lighting barbecues. These issues raised concerns about access for emergency vehicles, and residents now fear a recurrence of these problems.
Oldham Council stated that wardens patrolled the area and issued 946 penalty charge notices around the reservoir in 2025. The RSPB, which manages the car park, acknowledged the concerns. Councillor Helen Bishop, representing Saddleworth South, expressed "deep-rooted concerns" that the reservoir had reopened too soon, suggesting a comprehensive plan should have been agreed and communicated first.
The wildfire began on 11 July and was declared a major incident, with the incident stood down on 3 August. The RSPB noted that high visitor numbers bring benefits but also create challenges, urging visitors to park considerately, take litter home, and respect the landscape and residents. The charity is working with United Utilities, Oldham Council, and local communities on longer-term plans for the site.
