A van driver has been jailed for 10 years after causing the death of a highways worker on the M23. Vilius Domarkas, 38, admitted the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Mr Domarkas hit Anthony Howe, from Kent, while he was working on foot in a coned-off section of the motorway near Crawley, West Sussex. Lewes Crown Court heard that Mr Domarkas was driving a Citroen Relay van and was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision, which occurred at about 01:00 BST on 8 July.
Judge Martin Huseyin stated that Mr Domarkas had been "zig zagging between lanes" before the crash. A blood sample taken four hours after the incident showed Mr Domarkas was over the legal alcohol limit, with 221 microgrammes per 100ml of blood, compared to the legal limit of 80 milligrams.
Mr Domarkas, of no fixed address, was also disqualified from driving for 16 years and 8 months. He will serve two-thirds of his sentence in prison.
