A man killed when his van was struck by a train in Burscough on Saturday has been identified as Simon Gettings, 55. Mr Gettings was driving a supermarket delivery van when it was hit by a Northern train at about 15:00 BST.
The collision occurred at a crossing on Martin Lane, where the gates were reportedly left open. Two passengers on the Manchester-bound train suffered minor injuries.
Mr Gettings' family described him as a married father-of-two from Southport who had retired as a teacher after 25 years. A British Transport Police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
