Liberty Mitchell, 21, of Chipping Norton, has had her prison sentence increased to nine years and three months by the Court of Appeal. The Attorney General, Ellie Reeves KC MP, referred Mitchell's case under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.
The court heard that on 2 December 2022, Mitchell was driving at nearly 100mph in a 60mph zone near Aldsworth, Gloucestershire, when she attempted to overtake three vehicles on the wrong side of the road. She collided with a taxi, causing a pile-up involving multiple vehicles.
The taxi driver, Octavian Codreanu, died at the scene, and his passenger, Moyra Whelan, a history teacher, later died at Southmead Hospital from life-threatening injuries. Mitchell's actions also seriously injured three other people and injured a further three.
Mitchell, a self-employed domestic cleaner, was driving between jobs, and her motor insurance policy did not cover business use. Police investigations found videos on her social media accounts showing her driving dangerously, including speeding at 100mph and veering into oncoming traffic.
On 18 December 2025, at Gloucester Crown Court, Mitchell had pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing death whilst uninsured, and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She was initially sentenced to six years and eight months' imprisonment and disqualified from driving for eight years and four months.
