The Golden Spurtle, awarded annually at the World Porridge Making Championship in Carrbridge, Scotland, has been claimed by Gina Saarberg, the Netherlands national champion. Saarberg emerged victorious in the traditional porridge competition, which requires only untreated oatmeal, water, and salt.
The speciality prize was awarded to Robert Reid, the Australian national champion, for his porridge cannoli. The event, hosted in Carrbridge since 1994, saw almost 40 competitors from various countries, including Australia and the US, vying for the coveted Golden Spurtle.
The day's competition included six heats, with entrants preparing both a traditional porridge and a speciality dish. Despite initial technical difficulties with new induction hobs, the event proceeded, drawing hundreds of spectators to the Scottish Highlands village.
Reigning champion Sven Seljom of Norway missed out on the final, while Switzerland's Jeremy McTeague, who initially burned his oats, made it to the cook-off before Saarberg and Reid ultimately secured their wins.
