A court in the Netherlands has sentenced a 66-year-old Dutch-Rwandan man, identified as Eugene N, to life imprisonment for his role in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. He was convicted of war crimes and the crime of genocide, with the judge stating he acted with "genocidal intent."
The court in The Hague heard that N held an authoritative position in Mbazi, southern Rwanda, at the time of the massacre, overseeing approximately 1,000 people. He was accused of instructing Hutus not to let Tutsis escape from a football stadium, where they were subsequently attacked with stones, gunfire, hand grenades, clubs, and machetes.
N denied all charges, with his lawyers stating he was a victim who had lost family in the events. His defence team reportedly plans to appeal the charges, according to local news agency ANP. N was acquitted of the incitement to genocide.
