Three people have been charged following a wrong-way crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough which killed seven individuals, including two police officers. The incident occurred at approximately 03:39 BST on Saturday 22 August when a Volkswagen Passat, travelling the wrong way, collided with a marked Cleveland Police vehicle.
PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, died at the scene. The five occupants of the VW Passat – Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jakub Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, and Cole Robert Worthy, 17 – also died.
Cleveland Police have charged Kai Beattie, 19, with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. Cameron George, 26, has been charged with possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply and possession of criminal property, and is remanded in police custody. Kai Inco, 21, faces a charge of possession with intent to supply a Class B drug and has been released on conditional bail.
In the days following the crash, 17 other people were arrested in connection with the incident. These arrests included individuals suspected of participating in an organised crime group, possession of offensive weapons, and various drug and firearm offences. Many of those arrested have since been released on conditional bail, with one man remanded on recall to prison.
