Dutch authorities, in collaboration with the FBI, have arrested an alleged leader of the ShinyHunters hacking group. The 24-year-old man from Amsterdam was taken into custody on September 15 under Dutch law for allegedly participating in a criminal organisation.
Following his arrest and the seizure of his devices, police reportedly found information on his laptop concerning "two murders that should be committed abroad." He is now also under investigation for attempting to orchestrate these murders, an inquiry separate from the investigation into ShinyHunters.
The FBI's cyber division lead, Brett Leathermann, stated that Dutch authorities "moved quickly to protect victims and preserve critical evidence." The ShinyHunters group is accused of data breaches at over 140 organisations globally, including Pornhub, Ticketmaster, and AT&T. The group also claimed responsibility for a breach of the FBI's systems earlier this month.
The arrested man was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday and has been remanded into custody for at least 90 days.
