DVLA online medical service can save drivers up to 10 days

Drivers can now notify the DVLA of a wider range of medical conditions online, potentially saving up to 10 days on processing times compared to paper applications.

  • The DVLA's enhanced online medical service can reduce processing times by up to 10 days.
  • More than 60,000 drivers have already used the online service.
  • Drivers can now renew medical driving licences and update photos online simultaneously.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has expanded its online medical service, allowing car and motorcycle licence holders to notify the agency of a broader range of medical conditions digitally. This service can reduce processing times by up to 10 days compared to traditional paper applications.

Over 60,000 drivers have already utilised the enhanced online service. The DVLA reports exceptionally high demand for applications from customers with medical conditions, and the online system can facilitate initial actions, such as referring an application to a healthcare professional, within 24 hours in many cases.

The expanded service now allows drivers with multiple medical conditions to renew their driving licence online. Medical licence holders can also renew their driving licence photo at the same time, streamlining the process and potentially avoiding separate transactions and postage costs.

Further improvements are planned for this year, which will extend online medical notifications to additional customer journeys. This includes drivers renewing their licence at age 70, first-time provisional licence applicants, and customers whose licence was previously surrendered or revoked.

What this means for you: You can save up to 10 days on processing times by notifying the DVLA of a medical condition online instead of using paper applications. You can also track your application's progress online and avoid postage costs.
