The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an updated version of its Work Capability Assessment (WCA) handbook for healthcare professionals. This guidance, version 18, is specifically for healthcare professionals approved or appointed by the DWP's Chief Medical Adviser to carry out WCAs.
The DWP states that it publishes this guide to help the public understand how decisions are made regarding these assessments. The handbook forms part of the training received by healthcare professionals, alongside verbal information and coaching.
Previous updates to the handbook have included revised guidance on coping with social engagement, assessing substantial risk in claimants with mental health conditions, and aligning benefit terminology with Universal Credit.
