Easyjet has seen a substantial increase in its older cabin crew following a recruitment drive launched in 2022. The number of cabin crew over the age of 50 has more than doubled, while those aged over 60 have quadrupled.
This initiative comes as businesses reportedly struggle with skills gaps and retention, despite an ageing population. Research by Easyjet indicated that most adults who changed careers after 50 reported improved happiness.
Experts suggest that employing older workers could bring decades of practical experience and decision-making skills, which are particularly beneficial in leadership roles. It is also believed to lead to a better understanding of customers, higher retention rates, increased loyalty, and stronger leadership qualities.
The Centre for Ageing Better estimates that closing the employment gap for workers over 50 could boost the UK's GDP by at least £9bn annually and increase income tax and National Insurance contributions by £1.6bn per year.
