Eddie Howe has departed as Newcastle United manager, less than four weeks before the new season commences. His exit follows a 4-1 friendly defeat to Bristol City and comes after a five-year reign that saw the club secure its first domestic trophy in seven decades.
Howe, who led Newcastle to the Carabao Cup 17 months ago, leaves the club facing a period of transition. His probable replacement, Matthias Jaissle, is set to inherit a team that experienced a downturn in results last season, losing six of its last nine league games and nine of 17 overall.
The departure of Howe also raises questions about player retention, with Bruno Guimaraes potentially moving to Arsenal. This would mark the fourth high-class player departure in under a year, following Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, and Sandro Tonali, with combined proceeds around £370m.
Despite spending £250m last summer, Newcastle reportedly struggled to attract elite players, with Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi turning down moves this summer. The club's owners, the Saudi Public Investment Fund, along with sporting director Ross Wilson and CEO David Hopkinson, now face the task of navigating the club's future.
