Eddie Howe has departed as Newcastle United's head coach, concluding a tenure of just under five years and 231 games at St James' Park. His exit comes on the heels of a 4-1 pre-season friendly loss to Bristol City on Wednesday evening.
Howe, who was appointed in November 2021, led the club to a Carabao Cup victory in January 2023, marking their first major silverware since 1955. He also oversaw their qualification for the Champions League with a fourth-place league finish in the 2022-23 season.
Despite significant investment, Newcastle finished 12th last season, a decline from their fifth-place position in the prior campaign. The team won only five of their last 17 league games from January 7.
The club has recently seen the departures of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona. Newcastle is scheduled to travel to south-east Spain later this week, with a match against Valencia on Saturday, August 8, for their annual Trofeu Taronja game.
