England back row Marlie Packer has shared that defence coach Shaun Edwards' unexpected move to the Red Roses was partly inspired by his late mother, Phyllis. Edwards has joined the world champions for the rest of their autumn campaign after a six-and-a-half-year stint with France.
Packer recounted Edwards' story, stating he shared that his mother never had the opportunity to play but would have loved to. Phyllis Edwards, a hairdresser from Wigan, was a trusted advisor throughout her son's career and encouraged him to study rugby union when it went professional in 1995.
Edwards has an impressive coaching record, including domestic and European titles with Wasps, and seven Six Nations crowns with Wales and France. Packer highlighted the significance of a coach of his calibre wanting to work with the Red Roses, showcasing the growth of the women's game.
England's 39-Test winning streak recently ended with a 26-26 draw against Canada. The Red Roses are set to face New Zealand, their closest rivals in the world rankings, at Allianz Stadium this Saturday. They will then travel to North America for matches against Canada and the United States next month.
