Eighteen individuals have been arrested in connection with the 2021 assassination of Haitian president Jovenel Moïse, according to US officials. The suspects have been transported to Florida to stand trial.
FBI special agent Brett Skiles stated that the arrests underscore the FBI's commitment to bringing all participants in the plot to justice. Federal prosecutor Jason Reding Quinones confirmed that 18 individuals were transported from Haiti to face American justice in the southern district of Florida.
Mr Quinones added that 30 suspects have been indicted in the killing, and five have already been sentenced to life in prison in US courts. In May, four men were convicted in a federal court in Miami on charges including conspiracy to kill or kidnap Moïse.
President Moïse, 53, was shot dead on 7 July 2021, at his private residence by a group of about 20 military-trained Colombian mercenaries.
