Eleven outstanding seafarers have been awarded the prestigious Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service today, 3 September 2026. The recipients are recognised for their exceptional service, dedication, and leadership within the UK's maritime sector.
Among those honoured is 31-year-old Captain Joe Furness, from Oldham, who has inspired millions of young people to pursue maritime careers through his social media channel, JoeTheSailor. He has also mentored over 100 cadets and junior officers. Captain Furness previously received an award from the Hong Kong Government for his care of passengers during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Captain Martel Fursdon, the first female captain in The Lundy Company’s history, was recognised for championing safer and more inclusive practices at sea. She built a mentoring network for women in the industry and played a key role in rewriting safety guidance across 15 ships, as well as supporting repatriation efforts during the pandemic.
Also receiving the medal is 87-year-old Captain Brian Nibbs from Jersey, for his voluntary service to the maritime sector over five decades. This includes supporting families affected by the L’Ecume II boating fatality in 2022.
