An animal education organisation in Cumbria has reported a rise in snake rescues this year, including a baby corn snake discovered in the bread aisle of a food store. Pet Encounter, based in Workington, has taken in 21 snakes so far in 2026, an increase from 14 in 2025.
The snake found in the supermarket, nicknamed Crumbs, was located in a Heron Foods branch in Maryport last month. It was initially taken to a local vet before being handed over to Pet Encounter.
Ben Nicholson, a handler from Pet Encounter, suggests that the cost of living crisis may be contributing to the increase in abandoned or surrendered pet snakes. He noted the expense of equipment like heat mats and bulbs, which can be a significant factor in energy use.
Pet Encounter, originally established for educational purposes, is now considering adapting its business model to become a charity to help fund the care of these animals. Nicholson also highlighted a lack of education on keeping exotic pets and trends as factors in animals being abandoned.
