Ella Langley's country hit, 'Choosin' Texas', has made history by becoming the longest-running number one single on the US chart. The song has now spent 23 weeks at the top, surpassing Mariah Carey's 'All I Want for Christmas Is You'.
Released in October last year, 'Choosin' Texas' first topped the US Billboard chart in February. The bittersweet track details a woman's suspicion that her boyfriend is leaving her for another woman.
The song also reached the number one spot on the UK singles chart at the beginning of September, replacing Sam Fender and Olivia Dean's 'Rein Me In'. That song had also spent 23 weeks at number one, making it the UK's longest-running chart-topper.
The sustained success of both songs has prompted discussions about chart stagnation and the role of streaming services in promoting new music. Langley's song was co-written in 2024 with Miranda Lambert, Luke Dick, and Joybeth Taylor, with its initial inspiration stemming from a story about Lambert's pet kangaroo.
Langley, who is 27 and from Alabama, won all seven categories she was nominated for at the Academy of Country Music Awards in May, including female artist of the year and single of the year for 'Choosin' Texas'.
