Emergency Services Test Major Incident Response in Exercise Anvil

Emergency services, including the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, participated in Exercise Anvil to test their response to a simulated major road traffic collision.

  • Exercise Anvil simulated a drink-driver colliding with a parked bus, causing multiple casualties.
  • The training involved the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, Cumbria Constabulary, Sellafield Ltd’s Fire & Rescue Service, and the North West Ambulance Service.
  • Participants practiced casualty management, policing investigations, and multi-agency decision-making.

Emergency services recently took part in Exercise Anvil, a major training exercise designed to test their ability to respond to complex emergencies. The exercise, held at Griffin Park, simulated a serious road traffic collision involving a drink-driver and a parked bus, resulting in multiple casualties.

The scenario required participants to declare and manage a major incident, establish command arrangements, and use M/ETHANE messaging to share critical information. Officers worked with partners to preserve life, manage casualties using the Ten Second Triage approach, and conduct investigative actions.

Organised and led by Sergeant Dave Marsden and the Professional Development Unit, the training brought together Civil Nuclear Constabulary officers, Cumbria Constabulary’s Nuclear Estates Team, Sellafield Ltd’s Fire & Rescue Service, and the North West Ambulance Service.
