Chelsea have completed the signing of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez for £7.5m. The 33-year-old Argentinian has signed a three-year contract at Stamford Bridge, fulfilling his desire to leave Villa.

Martínez, who won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina and twice secured the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper, is set to displace Robert Sánchez as Chelsea’s number one. He expressed his delight, stating, “Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I’m just over the moon – I can’t wait to get started.”

Martínez added, “I’m someone who wants to win at everything I do and I want to bring that here to this football club because it’s a football club that wins titles, so I think it’s a good match.” He also pledged to give “100% every game, every training session to make the club, my teammates and the supporters proud.”

Aston Villa confirmed Martínez's departure, acknowledging his significant contributions since joining in 2020. This includes his role in their Europa League success in May, earning his first international caps, and winning two Copa América titles and a World Cup with Argentina while at the club.

Why this matters: This transfer marks a significant change in Chelsea's goalkeeping position and sees a high-profile player depart Aston Villa.
