The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has published guidance detailing the responsibilities of employers in supporting apprentices through their end-point assessments. In England, apprentices on an apprenticeship standard must successfully complete an independent assessment to confirm they have achieved occupational competence.
Employers are required to select an independent end-point assessment organisation (EPAO) that has been approved by the External Quality Assurance (EQA) provider for that standard. Engagement with the chosen EPAO should begin at the start of the apprenticeship programme.
The guidance stresses that employers should discuss the end-to-end apprenticeship delivery, including assessment, with the training provider before the programme commences. This includes understanding assessment methods and ensuring anyone involved in training the apprentice has the necessary skills and resources.
Employers should also review the assessment plan with their apprentice from the beginning, outlining the support available. During the 'gateway' period, employers and training providers decide if an apprentice is ready for their end-point assessment.
