England reclaim top T20 ranking after crushing Sri Lanka 3-0

England have returned to the number one spot in the T20 world rankings after completing a 3-0 series clean sweep against Sri Lanka.

  • England defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third T20 international at Old Trafford.
  • This victory marks England's 23rd win in 26 completed T20s since Harry Brook became captain in summer 2024.
  • Jos Buttler scored an unbeaten 61, while Sonny Baker and Jofra Archer each took two wickets.

England have surged back to the top of the T20 world rankings, securing a dominant 3-0 series clean sweep against Sri Lanka. The final match at Old Trafford saw England steamroll the tourists, winning by eight wickets with 62 balls to spare, a new record for England in a home T20 international.

Sri Lanka were dismissed for 124 runs in 18.5 overs, with England's pace bowlers making a significant impact. Sonny Baker continued his improvement with figures of 2-17, while Jofra Archer recovered from an expensive start to claim 2-23. Jamie Overton also impressed, conceding only 15 runs in his four overs and taking a wicket.

Chasing 125, England's powerful batting line-up, despite the absence of injured Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell, reached the target in just 9.4 overs. Jos Buttler led the charge with an unbeaten 61 from 32 balls, supported by Harry Brook's 33. The second-wicket pair shared an 85-run stand.

This success marks England's 23rd victory in 26 completed T20s since captain Harry Brook took the helm in the summer of 2024. The team will now build towards a 50-over World Cup in southern Africa in autumn 2027, with three One-Day Internationals against Sri Lanka set to begin on Tuesday in Durham.

Why this matters: England's return to the number one T20 ranking highlights their consistent performance and strong position in the format, setting a positive tone for future international competitions.
