Newcastle United secured a 2-1 Premier League victory over Hull City today, bouncing back from their recent 4-1 defeat at Leeds. Early goals from Joe Willock and Lewis Hall put Newcastle in control, but Hull fought back to make it a tense encounter.
Willock opened the scoring just three minutes in, lashing the ball past Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis. Four minutes later, Lewis Hall, recently recalled to the England squad, swept a shot into the bottom corner after exchanging passes with Harvey Barnes.
Despite conceding early, Hull, managed by Sergej Jakirovic, showed resilience. Yoane Wissa had a penalty saved by Tzolakis in first-half stoppage time. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle was forced to switch to a back three after Fabian Schär replaced Sean Steur, a formation Jaissle has stated is not his favourite.
Hull capitalised on this change, with Mohamed-Ali Cho scoring after Lewis Miley was caught in possession. From that point, Hull pressed hard, but Newcastle's goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek made several key saves to ensure the home side clung on for the victory.
Jaissle expressed pride in his team's commitment, stating, "It was an intense game. We started at a really high level, it was the right reaction to Leeds. But the missed penalty changed momentum. We tired and we needed to suffer but the commitment to win this game was really exceptional. It made me proud. It was something special." Jakirovic also praised his team's character, saying, "I’m very proud of how we played this game, especially the second half."
