England Test Coach Stephen Fleming to Balance Role with New Zealand Commentary

England's new Test head coach, Stephen Fleming, will return to New Zealand to work as a commentator for Sky New Zealand in October and December, an arrangement approved by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

  • Stephen Fleming will commentate on New Zealand's Test and white ball series against India from 22 October to 1 December.
  • The ECB has approved this commentary role, which is described as unprecedented for an England head coach.
  • Fleming's first assignment with England will be a three-Test series in South Africa in December and January.

England's new Test head coach, Stephen Fleming, is set to return to New Zealand next month to work as a commentator for Sky New Zealand. This will involve covering the Black Caps' Test and white ball series against India, despite Fleming having formally started his role with England.

Fleming arrived in England on Monday for a 10-day visit, during which he will hold discussions with captain Joe Root and Rob Key, the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) managing director of men’s cricket. The ECB granted Fleming a late start date after his appointment in late July and has also accommodated his commentary work.

Sky New Zealand announced on Monday that Fleming will join its commentary team for the India tour, which runs from 22 October to 1 December. This commentary role is described as unprecedented for an England head coach but has received approval from the ECB.

Fleming's initial assignment with England will be a three-Test series in South Africa, scheduled for December and January. Planning for this tour is expected to occur during his upcoming talks with Root.
