The first day of the decisive third Test between England and New Zealand at Trent Bridge will be remembered for the scintillating partnership between Tom Latham and Devon Conway. The duo put on 317 runs for the first wicket, leaving England reeling at the Centre.
However, the hosts staged a thrilling late comeback, removing four New Zealand batsmen for 44 runs to leave the visitors on 361-4 at stumps.
Latham remained unbeaten on 163, while Conway was dismissed for 200. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor are still at the crease, looking to build on the excellent start.
England's bowlers will be ruing the missed opportunities, particularly those that came in the morning session when the visitors were cruising at over 100 runs per over.
As the day drew to a close, England's captain, Ben Stokes, expressed his satisfaction with the fightback, saying: 'We're delighted with the way we finished the day. We've given ourselves a chance to really compete in this match.'
Meanwhile, New Zealand's skipper, Kane Williamson, acknowledged the visitors' dominance, stating: 'We've had a good day, but we know that England will come hard at us tomorrow.'
