England's new pace attack draws 2005 Ashes comparisons, says Trescothick

Interim head coach Marcus Trescothick believes England's current pace attack can be compared to the 2005 Ashes-winning quartet, following their series victory over Pakistan.

  • Marcus Trescothick sees similarities between the current pace attack and the 2005 Ashes-winning bowlers.
  • Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, and Josh Tongue have led England to a series win against Pakistan.
  • England will aim for a 3-0 clean sweep against Pakistan in the third Test starting on 9 September.

England's interim head coach Marcus Trescothick has drawn comparisons between the national team's new-look pace attack and the legendary 2005 Ashes-winning quartet. Trescothick, who was part of the 2005 team, highlighted the complementary skills of Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, and Josh Tongue.

This new foursome has been instrumental in England's recent series victory over Pakistan, a turnaround from a previous run of only two wins in 10 Tests. The success marks England's first series win since 2024, coming after Ben Stokes' retirement and Joe Root's return as captain.

Trescothick noted the blend of high pace from Archer, Tongue, and Atkinson, alongside Robinson's accuracy and movement, which has seen him take 23 wickets this summer at an average of 8.3. While 2005 captain Michael Vaughan believes the current attack needs a major series win for a full comparison, he added they are "certainly capable of doing something really special, and winning back the Ashes for England next summer."

England is now set to pursue a 3-0 clean sweep against Pakistan in the third Test at Edgbaston, commencing on 9 September. Trescothick has indicated a desire to play the most consistent team possible to achieve this goal, rather than giving reserves more Test experience.

Why this matters: The comparisons to the iconic 2005 Ashes team suggest a potential new era of success for England's Test cricket, particularly with a focus on their pace bowling strength.
