The English and Welsh Football Associations have withdrawn their support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, becoming the first UEFA members to do so alongside Finland. This move comes ahead of next year's FIFA presidential elections.
This decision follows FIFA's scrapping of a proposal to sell stakes in its tournaments to private investors, a move announced in the early hours of Saturday morning. This action has, for now, ended the threat of a World Cup boycott.
UEFA responded to the initial proposals on Saturday morning, stating, "We cannot keep going on like this with secret schemes on fast track timescales, cooked up by faceless individuals and of dubious benefit to the game." UEFA added that the current FIFA leadership has lost its confidence and that of many other football family members.
The Welsh FA, the first to publicly withdraw its support on Monday morning, stated, "Failing to put the best interests of football first is a failure we cannot accept."
