Arsenal have initiated formal transfer negotiations for Bruno Guimarães, but their opening offer has been turned down by Newcastle. The Premier League champions reportedly believe Guimarães is worth a maximum of £70m, while Newcastle value their captain at around £80m.

Guimarães, 28, met Newcastle's incoming manager, Matthias Jaissle, for the first time on Monday at the team’s pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain. This follows his post-World Cup holiday in Brazil.

Newcastle are under no pressure to sell Guimarães, who has two years remaining on his contract. The club has already sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham this summer.

In other transfer news for Newcastle, Lukas Hornicek, a 24-year-old Czechia goalkeeper, has completed a £26m move from Braga. He is expected to replace Nick Pope as the team's first choice.
