Jordan Henderson has completed a free transfer to Chelsea, signing a two-year contract after his departure from Brentford was mutually agreed. The move follows confirmation last week that the England international was set to leave the Bees.
At 36, Henderson is Chelsea’s eighth first-team signing since manager Xabi Alonso took the helm. He is also the most senior player acquired by the club’s owners, BlueCo, since their 2022 takeover.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Henderson expressed his excitement for the new challenge. He stated, "Given the size of the club, the manager – who I have great admiration for – and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down." He added that he was impressed by the ownership's desire for Chelsea's success.
Henderson, who captained Liverpool to a Premier League title in 2020 and a Champions League trophy in 2019, has 91 senior caps for England. He is currently recovering from a broken wrist sustained during England’s World Cup celebrations after their last-16 victory over Mexico.
His arrival at Stamford Bridge, alongside the recent signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton, signals a shift in Chelsea’s recruitment strategy. This change comes after the club finished 10th last season, prompting a refocus away from exclusively targeting young, inexperienced players.
