English club rugby's professional top tier is marking its 30th season, with chief executive Simon Massie-Taylor suggesting the league is entering a new phase. Massie-Taylor anticipates two or three more high-profile investment deals for Prem clubs within the next two years.
The league also aims for an expansion to include two additional teams by 2029, though this requires further backing for clubs such as Worcester. Despite logistical challenges, there is reported confidence in growing investor interest.
Rob Calder, Prem Rugby’s head of growth, highlighted a promotional campaign that incorporates the sport's heritage, featuring modern stars in 90s-style jerseys. This reflects a new focus on the marketability of history, alongside efforts to attract younger audiences through platforms like YouTube, where opening games saw a fivefold increase in viewership from last season.
Other initiatives include reinventing the Prem Rugby Cup in 2027-28 as a next-generation tournament and a restructured European competition from 2030. However, an imminent rise in the Prem salary cap is considered highly unlikely, and a proposed Birmingham franchise is deemed logistically impossible within the next five years. The World Club Championship has also been put on hold for at least four years.
