Eric Simons, the former head coach of South Africa, is set to join England's Test set-up as bowling coach. He will be part of Stephen Fleming's backroom team, with his new role expected to be confirmed on Monday when England announces its latest central contracts.
Simons, 64, has a history of working with Fleming, having been alongside him at the Indian Premier League's Chennai Super Kings, the SA20's Joburg Super Kings, and Major League Cricket's Texas Super Kings. Simons also served as South Africa's head coach from 2002 to 2004 and had a spell as India's bowling coach.
The appointment comes as England continues to split head-coaching duties across formats, with New Zealander Fleming in charge of the Test side and Brendon McCullum leading the white-ball teams. Fleming is assembling his backroom team ahead of his first series in charge, which will be against South Africa in December.
In other appointments, Kevin Pietersen has been named a batting consultant for the white-ball teams in preparation for the 50-over World Cup in southern Africa. Pietersen is due to join the squad for the white-ball tour of Australia and then in South Africa for three one-day internationals in January.
