Etiquette experts offer guidance on public transport behaviour

Etiquette experts have provided advice on various public transport situations, including offering seats, placing feet on seats, and seat reclining.

  • Offering a seat should be done discreetly to those who need it more.
  • Putting feet, whether shod or bare, on public transport seats is considered inappropriate.
  • Reclining a seat on a plane is generally acceptable, but should be done slowly and with awareness of the person behind.

Etiquette experts have offered guidance on navigating common situations on public transport. Rupert Wesson, director of Debrett's, advises offering seats discreetly to those who genuinely need them, such as parents with young children, while exercising caution with others.

Laura Akano, founder of Polished Manners, states that putting feet on seats is unacceptable, regardless of whether shoes are worn or not. She emphasises that public spaces should be treated with respect and are not extensions of a private sitting room.

Regarding plane travel, Wesson notes that reclining a seat is generally permissible if the seat allows it. However, he suggests checking who is behind you and avoiding reclining during food or drink service to prevent spills.

What this means for you: Consider offering your seat discreetly to those who may need it more. Avoid placing your feet on seats on public transport. If reclining a seat on a plane, do so slowly and be mindful of the person behind you.
