Lidl cancels £90 fine for EV driver charging after hours

Lidl has cancelled a £90 parking ticket issued to a driver who charged his electric car at a store in Barton-upon-Humber outside opening hours. The company is reportedly reviewing its EV charging policy.

  • Trevor Taylor received a £90 parking ticket after charging his EV for 16 minutes at a Lidl in Barton-upon-Humber outside store hours.
  • Lidl has cancelled the ticket and is reviewing its EV charging policy at sites with car park restrictions.
  • The retailer introduced out-of-hours parking restrictions due to concerns about anti-social behaviour.

A driver who used an electric vehicle (EV) charger at a Lidl store in Barton-upon-Humber after closing hours received a £90 parking ticket, which has since been cancelled by the retailer.

Trevor Taylor stated he spent approximately 16 minutes charging his vehicle in the car park on Sunday 12 July at about 6pm. He later received a parking charge notice (PCN) for £90, reduced to £45 if paid within 14 days.

Lidl said signs advertised the rules, but the company has now cancelled Mr Taylor's ticket. The BBC understands that Lidl is reviewing its EV charging policy at locations where car parks have restrictions.

The retailer introduced restrictions on out-of-hours parking due to concerns about anti-social behaviour. Mr Taylor said he believed EV charging should be available around the clock, noting that EV apps showed the charging point as 24-hour availability.

Another motorist, Judy Ayliffe, also received a PCN for using an InPost locker at a Lidl in Beverley outside store hours, which was subsequently cancelled after she contacted her MP.

What this means for you: If you use EV charging points at Lidl stores, you should check site-specific signage for parking restrictions, especially outside trading hours.
